My Puppy ALWAYs Sleeps?

I just got a jack russell terrior two days ago, he is 8 weeks old. and all he dos is sleep! he sleeps most of the night and during the day he lays around and sleeps, i can pik him up and he falls back to sleep no matter what is this normal

Maggie,

Puppies of course will sleep a lot. However; being that this is a Jack Russell we are talking about, keep monitoring him. They are about the most energetic dogs there are, but, if this keeps up at a chronic level, have him checked. He may have a health issue worthy of being checked out.

Most puppies play a lot also at 8 weeks and as they get older (10-12-14 weeks……..etc.) but, being lethargic is NOT good.

You may want to check with your Breeder or other Jack Russell Breeders or JR Dog Clubs and contact some owners.

Better to be safe than sorry. I hope the little fella' will be and is otherwise okay!

Yea, this is normal. They're still in that baby stage, where they sleep a lot. They're just growing! It's all.

yes it is normal it a puppy . puppies need as much sleep as they can get. if he is sleeping dont pick him up or move him. he needs his sleep . and as he gets older he will sleep less.

He is a BABY and babies sleep a lot. Just like human babies and every other kind of baby. Believe me, in 6 months you'll be wishing he slept all the time.

A few things could be causing this. Most likely it's this heat in the middle of summer when nobody likes to be too active. You also could just have a bit of a lazy puppy who likes to snooze. The fact that he is sleeping through the night is a great thing and most puppy owners would envy you. If this really is a problem wait it out for a while (it's only been two days) and after it cools down and is still a problem talk to your breeder or a vet.

Puppies need to sleep a lot, just like human babies. They are growing rapidly. And since cell repair and division happens mostly during sleep, it is essential that your puppy gets a lot of rest. When the puppy is sleeping, leave him be. Waking him will only make him more sleep and that is less time for you to play with him. Have you ever seen a newborn baby? If they aren't eating or drinking, chances are they are sleeping. That is nature. Your puppy will have short play periods and will need to sleep again. The time between naps will become greater and greater until he's about a year old. Then it levels out. It is nice to see you are a concerned owner. Keep up the good work.

well first of all that's VERY unusually for a terrior to sleep like that. but he most likely isn't getting enough protein and pups need a lot of that! good luck!!

It most likely is normal its still growing so it needs its sleep… but if this continues for past a year than… it could probably be something else thats the problem.. in which you should take it to your vet.

at this age I find that this is quite common in a puppy. The majority of their day is sleep. When I got my puppy about a year ago he did the same thing. Still you should keep an eye on him and consult your local veterinarian if needed. good luck!
